The challenge
A Nordic shipping company faced a severe onboard crisis when fire broke out mid-crossing between Scandinavia and the UK. With mayday signals transmitted and the vessel half a day from the British coast, the situation was operationally and reputationally critical. Limited onboard infrastructure made coherent dialogue with the mainland difficult.
The approach
Throughout the crisis, Fredrik embedded with the company's communications team to manage Swedish media exposure and monitor tabloid and broadcast coverage in real time. He provided tactical counsel on management statements, guided the timing and framing of public communications, and advised senior leadership on when to speak, what to say, and how to say it.
The outcome
The crew successfully repaired the engines and brought the vessel safely to port in the UK. Despite difficult onboard conditions, media coverage remained measured and balanced. Effective communication management prevented a severe operational incident from becoming a lasting reputational crisis.
